Stay healthy this winter by drinking tea!

Every news channel across the world has one message that is spreading fear and dread; Corona-virus. This disease is being labelled as one of the most disproportionate media disasters of the new decade. So much damage is being done by the media's incessant focus on the disease and it's spreading throughout the world. Wrong information combined with false reports by the public spreads like wild fire causing wide spread panic.

Let's all take a deep breath and let all that unnecessary fear and stress go. Corona viruses are nothing new, discovered in 1960 already. Most upper airway infections caused by viruses are a type of Corona-virus, that is why a number is included in the classification to help differentiate between them...

I have decided to share a more positive spin on this health crisis by focusing on more positive things that will hopefully leave you feeling empowered and ready to face this coming winter in South Africa.

Before I begin I would like to mention that I am not a medical practitioner and that the information shared in this blog is intended as a holistic supplement to support the immune system and is not by any means preventative or a cure for any health related problem. If you suffer from any medical condition I recommend that you consult your physician before making any changes to your diet or before you consume any suggested remedies in this blog.

Winter is associated with health challenges ranging from the common cold to more serious illness like the flu or pneumonia. Most of us try our best to avoid getting sick, and some people get flu vaccinations whilst others amp up on vitamin C and other immune boosting supplements.

Which ever route  you feel works for you, good hygiene still remains the most effective defense against infection. Here are some common examples:
*Wash your hands regularly with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds.
*Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth.
*Avoid contact with people who are coughing, sneezing and who has runny noses.
*Avoid any direct contact with tissue paper, cups or cutlery used by sick people.
*If you are sick please stay at home! (This is not the time to come do your hair at the salon!)
*Take a hot shower the minute you get home before getting in your bed. This way if there are any viruses on your skin or clothes they get removed from your body before it gets a chance to contaminate your sleeping area.

The use of face masks are controversial as we don't have a culture of wearing masks when we are feeling under the weather in SA. The correct idea behind wearing a face mask is to avoid spreading your germs if you feel sick and have to move around in public spaces... but because it is not a common practice in our culture, healthy people are starting to wear masks in order to avoid getting sick. This might reduce your risk of inhaling air burn viruses but it is not 100% effective all of the time. So don't rely on this as your only means of defence.

80% of all infected people do recover when infected by a Corona virus and if you do get sick you will depend mostly on your immune system as there are no known cure for any Corona-virus. Antibiotics help fight infection especially secondary infections caused by bacteria. But antibiotics does not cure you. Your immune system therefore is your most important defense you have in fighting off any disease.

But the main reason I wanted to write today is to tell you of my favourite tea from Woolworths, that I have discovered that might just be, the single most powerful remedy to boost your immune system with this winter. It is the Higher Living Golden Turmeric Organic tea!

Yes you have read that correctly. Tea! A simple cup of tea might just contain the magic ingredients to boost your immunity and fight of infection. Here are the ingredients of this organic tea and its health benefits:

Turmeric and especially its most active compound curcumin have many scientifically-proven health benefits, such as the potential to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer. It's a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and may also help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis.

Ginger is a popular spice. It is high in gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
*Ginger can help prevent various types of nausea. This applies to sea sickness, chemotherapy-related nausea, nausea after surgery and morning sickness.
*Ginger appears to be effective at reducing the day-to-day progression of muscle pain, and may reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness.
*There are some studies showing ginger to be effective at reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis, which is a very common health problem.
*Ginger has been shown to lower blood sugar levels and improve various heart disease risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes.
*Ginger appears to speed up emptying of the stomach, which can be beneficial for people with indigestion and related stomach discomfort.
*Ginger appears to be very effective against menstrual pain when taken at the beginning of the menstrual period.
*There is some evidence, in both animals and humans, that ginger can lead to significant reductions in LDL cholesterol and blood triglyceride levels.
*Ginger contains a substance called 6-gingerol, which may have protective effects against cancer. However, this needs to be studied a lot more.
*Studies suggest that ginger can protect against age-related damage to the brain. It can also improve brain function in elderly women.
*The Active Ingredient in Ginger Can Help Fight Infections:
*Gingerol, the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, can help lower the risk of infections.

Licorice root is used to soothe gastrointestinal problems. In cases of food poisoning, stomach ulcers, and heartburn, licorice root extract can speed the repair of stomach lining and restore balance. This is due to the anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties of glycyrrhizic acid.

*Rose tea is rich in polyphenols, such as gallic acid, anthocyanins, kaempferol, and quercetin. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals and contribute to good health.
*Possible positive effects of Rose tea might include: Its purported benefits include:
