The Art of Doing Nothing

You cannot serve from an empty cup…

These words ring true every time I say them to a client who looks exhausted and run down… and I see this more often then I feel is healthy! Are you a working mother, say no more! You need to pay attention and listen up! When was the last time you had some me-time? Don’t remember? Or you don’t even know what it means? Then you are in the danger zone of a weak immune system, feeling constantly overwhelmed by life or you are a workaholic.

Somewhere along the lines we have picked up the false belief that to place ourselves last on the priority list is a noble thing… add to that the idea that doing nothing equals laziness or tardiness, this couldn’t be further from the truth! Even God took the 7th day off to rest! What makes you super-woman or super-man that you believe you can keep going 24/7, 365 days of the year? The idea is to create a life you don’t necessarily need to take a holiday to recover from, but to maintain your energy and equilibrium throughout the year. Who wants to live for the weekend only to exist through the week anyway?

Much of what is driving us in our hectic schedules is fear. Fear of judgement,  fear of failure and fear of not having enough. We play the “what if” game all too well! But our bodies tell us when it has simply had enough when our immune system crashes and we are forced to retreat to bed with a whole pharmacy next to our beds to recover as soon as humanly possible… only to get back up on the horse and catch up with the backlog as well as the normal demands on our time.  This is life right? Wrong! This is a lifestyle of choice!

Emotionally and mentally this stress can manifest in various ways… poor sleeping patterns, depression, mood swings, poor appetite, constant agitation, frustration and road rage are but a few warning signs that you are already in the danger zone. Self medication with sleeping tablets, pain medication, recreational drugs or alcohol is becoming more common practice, and socially acceptable than ever before. And let’s face it.. stress is the killer if our times. Not to mention poor diet and our relationship with food… that’s a whole other blog…

So, if any of what I’ve written here so far resonates with you, then read on, because I am suggesting a very do-able and affordable manner of maintaining personal equilibrium,  by learning and practicing the art of ‘No-Doing’.

Taking a personal day can begin by taking your diary and scheduling a personal day in advance,  long before you need to take one by pretending you are sick simply to get the space and time off from work... I know we all do it from time to time when life gets to rough at times! But if this is what you need to do to maintain your sanity, do so, because work will still be there tomorrow, and your wellbeing is far more important! Anyhow, after scheduling your me-time into your diary (you need at least one such day per month!) you need to communicate this intention to your family or to anyone that needs to know that you intend to spend some time alone. Setting this personal boundaries will ensure you are uninterrupted, and will also ensure that your “me time” is guilt free and fully enjoyable.

So where to begin? There are many things you can do to partake in a personal day… you can go shopping alone, or go to the art museum, take your camera and go for a walk in nature, or go for a drive. What ever gets you excited about spending some time alone. But my personal favourite is to do a “pyjama day” at home. Especially now during the winter months. Hibernate a bit… its good for the soul.

But what do you do with yourself all alone at home? Won’t you get bored? The art of doing nothing begins with setting a clear intention. So you need to set some rules in place to ensure you make full use of these rare opportunities that you are creating for yourself. Planning is key! So for a successful pyjama day, you need to make sure you won’t need to leave the house. Stock up on necessary groceries and get a DVD or that novel you’ve been dying to read. Switch off your phone, and engage your “out if the  office” feature on your computer. If you are sharing your home with others, hang a “Do not disturb” sign on your door!

Remove your watch, you don’t need to be reminded of time. And every time your nagging voice tells you that you are wasting time, remind that voice that you are engaging in a very purposeful act of self care! Its not a waist of time, in fact its making full use of time! As long as its meaningful by setting intention and using the time to rest or spend it in doing something self affirming, it is a gift of great value to yourself, believe me!

The intention is to try and make this a healthy and uplifting experience,  but you know what resonate with your soul… try to avoid having too much sugar and caffeine,  and definitely no alcohol or drugs, that would defeats the whole purpose. The idea is to commune with your self, not to escape from yourself! Here us a short list of things you might want to explore and do. Try them all, and keep the ones that work for you… really, do anything that you find relaxing as long as its not a chore, or any work. Avoid all social media, in fact try not to engage with  any technology for the day…

Read a book
Prepare yourself a nourishing meal
Meditate
Attend a retreat virtual or actual
Have a salt bath or aromatherapy bath or both!
Give yourself a facial
Light some candles
Burn incense
Have a cup of tea or have the whole pot!
Drink plenty of water
Take a nap
Switch off your phone
Write a letter to yourself
Create positive affirmations
Journal
Take a walk in the park or in nature
Doodle
Colour in an adult colouring book
Paint a painting or create a craft, and if you’re clueless contact me for a personal Creatively fit one on one coaching session!
Listen to music (look at my playlist at the end of my personal favourite list)
Watch a good movie or watch some uplifting TED Talks!
Play with your pets
Do your own manicure/pedicure
Garden or plant something
Let go… and simply BE!

Some of my own personal things I like to use in a personal day of my own are:
Himalayan skin care products for your facial… ( they are affordable and vegan. No preservatives or parabens and very effective and easy to use. You can find them at Clicks or the Wellness warehouse)
Davines hair care  to pamper your tresses...(affordable high quality natural and organic haircare products that is sustainable and sulphate and paraben free. It is registered on the slow food Presido that ensures a future for endangered plant species! *Get two products and receive a gift while stocks last!)
Himalayan pink rock salt and aromatherapy oils for a bath (I enjoy Lavender,  Patchuli, Sandalwood and Ylang-ylang )
Reiki and meditation (I am a Reiki Master, if ever you can learn this gentle art of healing I encourage you to invest the time and money to do so! Very empowering! )
Smudging (using sacred smoke of burning herbs to cleanse the aura, or simply burning incense is an uplifting experience for me)
Crystals (crystals have a subtle energy that can help to support intention and balance your personal energy field)
Angel and unicorn oracle cards (divination is always a healing and uplifting experience for me. Try a deck that resonates with you!)
My Google music Playlist (music is key to relax and let go!)

https://play.google.com/music/playlist/AMaBXylLAG4cbGjpaRs9H9H2yW9uNTtGCqNt6fBi5vmwhOrc8Soww9UjLcw0guawrOTDQf2d_0P-HrC4oeTnCL0JEG3TjVjuQw%3D%3D

If you can't have a personal day at your own home because you simply don’t have the privacy or time to be alone, then you have to make another plan to incorporate self-care into your routine. If you simply avoid spending time alone, ask yourself why? Why do you find it so frightening to be alone with yourself? What is it that you are avoiding? What is it that you are ignoring? So much treasure is hidden within solidary moments. We centre ourselves, we get in tune with our deepest desires, and we also get to be brutally honest with ourselves.

But above all, we get to fill the cup so we can serve others again because it is full!

But taking the step to self care by using other means like a spa day or visiting me at my fabulous hair salon in Wonderboom (Salon Allure),  will go a long way in creating this practice of no-doing in a safe environment where asking these deep questions can be less threatening to your ego self.

Don’t have enough money? Just another reason why visiting Salon Allure might give you a pleasant surprise! The resident beautician is both a joy and a pleasure and her treatments are efficient and deeply pampering, and your wallet will also thank you! Trust me I know this from personal experience.  Elmien is super professional and does her work with passion and love. To book a beauty treatment with her, simply give her a call on: 0842341779 I personally recommend her!

Gideonslight Hair, Art & Soul newsletter June 2017

Dear friends,

What a wonderful journey life is! I am so grateful and blessed to follow the trail of Divine synchronicity that is guiding my life. When you start to take action on the inspiration and opportunities that life present you with, your Soul takes you on a journey of wonders and miracles like you have never experienced before.

For far too long in my life have I resisted and pulled back in fear of these opportunities, because I believed I am not ready, or I didn’t have enough resources, or that I am not qualified enough to take the leap of faith… and so I stayed stuck in situations that didn’
t serve my highest good for far too long.

But the day comes when the risk of blooming far outweighs the risk of staying closed and I burst forth into full bloom in full glorious colour!
I am happy to share with you that my move to Wonderboom was both a blessing and a Divine door of opportunity that I am very grateful for. I took the risk and since that moment it’s been a journey of such amazing wonders. One opportunity after another unfolds like layers of a flower that is opening up to receive the full exposure of the sun.

A lot of you know that I have been a ‘closet artist’ for many years… painting as a hobby, with the occasional artwork that is ‘beautiful enough’ to hang or sell… mostly I painted what inspired me and to decorate my own home with. But recently I came to the realization that art is part of my Soul destiny and since I started on my Logotherapy journey last year, have been looking for ways to expand my latent skills and to incorporate it into my counselling practice as art therapy.

I have been following Whitney Freya in the USA for over 4 years now, finding her method of art and life coaching inspirational. But because the Rand is so weak against the US $, I could only dream of enrolling in one of her courses, and placed this desire on the bucket list of my life…

Recently I received her latest newsletter and I learned that she launched her 3rd book; “Rise above… Free your mind one brush strike at a time”, and when I finished reading her introduction, decided on the spot that I will purchase her book as a treat to myself.

Little did I know that this small step of personal approval in the direction of my dreams would lead to so many more doors opening at once…  a floodgate of opportunities opened giving me and my husband the opportunity to study with Whitney Freya personally, and to be the first two South-Africans that will carry this Creatively For Coaching Certification.

We have been busy since 26 May in this challenging and enriching Coaching program and enjoying the fruit of our labour.
In the near future we will be able to offer personal coaching, creative development vision quests, Art retreats and much more, so watch this space!

At the salon things are a bit quieter as most of us in South-Africa are getting into winter mode. Along with the recent announcement that we are now officially in a financial recession, doesn’t make it any better…

On this note I would like to share some Jewish wisdom… during a recession is the best time to start a new business. We must stop to look for employment and flame up the spirit of entrepreneurial vision… we must tap into our creative resources and think outside the box.

With that said, I am proud to say that I have planned ahead and my price structure at Salon Allure is very comparable and sustainable for the quality of service and product that you are getting. When we are in financial constriction periods, people want to make sure that what ever they spend money on is quality and not necessarily quantity. I only use the best ‘Davines ~ Sustainable Hair Cosmetics’, and my entire service is done in-person. You have my undivided attention from the moment you arrive to your departure. Very few salons can make that claim today!

So… make the effort and schedule your next hair appointment during a week-day. Go ahead… take the afternoon off or even better take a days leave and go big and come pamper yourself. We have an amazing and very reasonably priced beautician on site that can pamper you from head to toe… and then I can whip your hair back into shape!

My money saver deals are priced based on hair length, making it very affordable:
Money saver deal #1(Short hair): Colour (root tint), cut & Blow-wave for only *R699!
Money saver deal #2 (Short hair): Half head HL, cut & Blow-wave for only *R799! (Toner not included!)
Receive a *free Davines Minu colour locking treatment & mask valued at R360! (Treatment offer only valid till 30 August)

*Longer hair money saver deals also available. Just ask for a price-list on WHATSAPP.

Terms and conditions apply! Offer only valid Tuesdays to Fridays, not public holidays or Saturday's!

Please feel free to use WHATSAPP to book your appointment. Many clients are starting to book ahead to ensure they get a spot that suits them… so don’t wait too long to book your appointment. My Saturdays are filling up fast!

Lastly... our salon website is now up and running... check it out, but please dont book through the website! Please contact me directly to book! Thanks!
http://www.salon-allure.co.za

Please note I will not be available between 24 to 28 July because I will be at UNISA for my Logotherapy training course!

Looking forward to see you all again soon.
Stay blessed and stay beautiful!

A culture of Entitlement written by Gideonslight

I recognized the real issue behind much of what is wrong with our nation today… as I’m driving to the Gautrain station a taxi chases past me over a red robot and shortly after brake in front of me causing me to change lanes to avoid a collision… then comes chasing after me and flash headlights to get me to get out of its way… during my early morning drive 7 people drove over red robots in front of me or broke some traffic law to get to where they are headed… then it dawned on me.

It is the sense of ENTITLEMENT that we exhibit that is out of balance with CONSIDERATION and RESPECT for others and the law. We shake our fists at a corrupt government that believes they are ENTITLED to take the taxpayers money... we are angry at criminals who believe they are ENTITLED to kill the farmer because the land should be given to them...

We get frustrated with the taxi drivers who believe they are ENTITLED to drive like maniacs because they deliver a vital service to the community...
People will drive nearly on top of you to get you to drive faster or to change lanes because they feel a sense of ENTITLEMENT to the road, and they can drive faster than you so get out of the way!

Its time that we check our very own EGO and sense of ENTITLEMENT. Then we will notice that we all carry this anti-social cancer within us... no wonder the world feels like a hostile and alien place...

If we as fellow citizens don't get our sense of ENTITLEMENT in balance with UNITY CONSCIOUSNESS I'm afraid we'll be our very own destruction too... Because today it's OK to drive over a red robot because we believe we are ENTITLED to get to our destination before others... but tomorrow we take from an innocent person something of value to them without realising that our behaviour is just as bad as the leaders who do the same to us. We all break the golden rule… do onto others as you would have done to you…

Without realising that our moral compass has been on a slippery slope for a long time... ENTITLEMENT combined with superiority complexes, selfishness and separatism brings forth the Zuma’s of our world. Microcosm vs macrocosm... YOUR small action is part of the BIG PROBLEM. It’s called the BUTTERFLY EFFECT.

HOW IS YOUR SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT AFFECTING YOUR BEHAVIOR FELLOW SOUTH AFRICAN? Is your sense of ENTITLEMENT also contributing to the state of the nation or are you making this a better world for all of us by being considerate, thoughtful, compassionate, law abiding and kind? Do you respect the law selectively as it suits you? Then you are part of the problem! Think about it…

Remember hate and intolerance cannot drive out corruption and lawlessness. We cannot solve the problem of our society with the same thinking and behaviour that created it in the first place…

We need to recognise where we are part and parcel of the same social cancer that is eating away at the fabric of our nation. The remedy for our nation does not lie in decapitating it’s corrupt head but it begins on the grassroots level where we each adjust our own behaviour accordingly.

The world would be clean if we all sweep our own back yards… just like charity begins at home… so does the moral and character of our nation…

Gideonslight May Newsletter

Dear client,

I cannot believe the speed at which time flies! It felt like yesterday that I wrote my first monthly newsletter, and today is the 4th of May already! So, here is the latest news and information regarding everything that is #Gideonslight!

The 2nd month special offer came to an end on the 31st of May, and if you missed out on the great deal, I'm sorry! But there is always something special happening at Allure, so… its time to introduce the ‘MONEY-SAVER DEALS’.

With our current economic climate,  everyone is turning their cents over twice before spending it, and I wanted to make sure that all my clients get the best possible deal, with the highest quality product possible. So, depending on your hair length , and density, I have two different weekly deals that will be a *standard offer, available from MONDAY TO FRIDAY that should make the MAINTENANCE of your hair a bit easier! Saturdays and public holidays excluded! So here is a breakdown…

Money deal #1: A Short Hair Root tint, Cut & Blow-dry with a Davines Mask Treatment from *R699!
Money deal #2: A Short Hair Half head Hi-Lights, Cut & Blow-dry with a Davines Mask Treatment
from *R799!

👉❗ By making an appointment you automatically agree to the following terms and conditions.
👉*Prices are based on the maximum amount of colour (30ml) per root application on fine hair. Medium to course and high density hair will need more colour/product and therefore the price will be more than the advertised price. No colour correction or colour change services are included in the deals! Always ask for a quote before any service commences!
👉Money deals are only available on weekdays 8h30am-4h00pm.
👉Prices does not include extra colour, toners or bondplex/keratin treatments!
👉Deals are not available on public holidays, Saturdays or after hours.
👉Failing to cancel your appointment at least 24 hours before the time, or not honoring your appointment will result in penalties. You can be held responsible for the full value of your booking. The closer to the actual appointment time you cancel will determine the percentage of the cancellation fee payable.

The regular client bookings are starting to pay off, and it is a great help to know how to plan my stock purchases to ensure that I have your favourite Davines colour or retail product in stock for when you visit… so if you’ve been battling to get an appointment with me, here is why:

*Clients are encouraged to reschedule their next appointment before they leave to ensure that they have a booking for when their next maintenance appointment is due.
*This helps me to plan and budget for the month ahead.
*I encourage my clients to book via WhatsApp or messenger, as I am simply not able to always answer my phone when you call! Simply let me know when you hope to see me and for what hair service, and I’ll get back to you!
*My bookings work through Google and I use your email address to ensure that your appointment appear on your smartphone Calendar, with convenient reminders to remind you of your appointment.
*PLEASE CANCEL YOUR APPOINTMENT WITH ME AT LEAST 24HOURS IN ADVANCE TO AVOID PENALTIES! Please consider that I have a serious loss of income should you not show up for your appointment,  or cancel it too late. I am not able to reschedule with another client if you cancel late. Please respect my time. Thank you!

If you have visited me at Salon Allure,  you will know that you receive 100% attention and service delivery from me personally. There is no apprentice or operator working on you, so every detail is added by me personally. This gives 100% client satisfaction,  but the downside is  that I can only help one client at a time, and I can also only help a certain amount of clients per day… so please bear that in mind, should you try your luck to get an appointment in short notice. I do try my best to accommodate as many clients I can. I only work until 16h00 because I have other duties to attend to after 16h00.

Good news! I now have my credit card facilities,  so no more stress about drawing cash! Simply bring your VISA OR MASTERCARD and swipe to pay for your hair service and retail purchases!

I am  a Davines stockist, but only carry the OI range in retail for now. So if you let me know a week in advance or so, I take a 50% deposit and I'll order any Davines product you need for you, and the outstanding balance is payable on collection.

I have just concluded an in intense two day training course at the Davines South Africa studio, and I must say it is good to go back to basics to get tuned up again from the foundation upwards.

The *New MASK WITH VIBRACHROM COLOUR range from Davines is an inspiration and a total joy to work with, and certainly one of the wisest decisions I’ve made regarding my own business… I have gotten incredible results and the feedback from my *Loyalty program VIP clients is very encouraging!

I am particularly impressed with the technology behind the *new VIBRACHROM,  because this patented formula is putting Davines in the lead of the pack once again Internationally with this ground breaking technology.
The colour consists of 3 parts that make up this sustainable colour system from Davines.
⭐Quinoa protein is the protein that provides protection, conditioning and longer lasting colour!
⭐Omega 9 provides exceptional shine and conditioning power, and illuminates the colour from within the hair strand.
⭐Phospholipid technology used in the textile industry to colour Silk,  Wool and natural fibres, is now used in the hair colour, to relieve surface tension in the hair, resulting in easy and even colour absorption, allowing for a reduction in the Ammonia content in the colour.
⭐It gives perfect grey coverage!
⭐It gives exceptional shine and is much more vibrant.
⭐Lasts exceptionally good, especially if you use Davines hair care to maintain your hair,  and increased even more if you gave the ‘MINU COLOUR LOCK’ treatment after your colour service.
⭐The colour has a pleasant fragrance.
⭐35 minute development time saves time and money.
⭐The new colour has a blue undertone making it much easier to reduce unwanted warm tones in the hair.
⭐Colour is DPP free, meaning you ate less likely to be allergic to the colour! (If you are allergic to other colour or DPP DYE then please do a skin patch test before your first full head application to ensure safety!)
⭐I now offer an in depth colour consultation that looks at suitability of colours on the colour chart and that provides a recommendation of which Davines products would best support your hair needs.

I am looking forward to pamper your hair with Davines and their new MASK WITH VIBRACHROM! Send me a WhatsApp now to book your *MONEY DEAL!

Doing the "granny grey" trend the right way by Gideonslight

Doing the "granny grey" hair colour trend the right way is harder than it seems! When you scroll through Pinterest, you will find thousands of images showcasing granny grey trends, ranging from horrible to amazing and everything in between.

Due to the huge demand, and the common misconceptions regarding this trend, I thought it a good idea to give you all the facts, show you what it should look like, and what could go wrong….

First let’s discuss suitability. Just because you have grey hair, doesn’t mean the grey colour will suit you! If you have a yellow undertone skin colour, you stand a higher risk of looking older and more drab than fab with the “granny grey” trend. The hair should not look like a wig on your head. This is a sure indication that the colour doesn’t suit you! If you have a warm undertone to your skin, it us recommend that you keep your hair colour tones on the warm side. Blond tones for warmer skins should be selected from warmer tones for example beige, champagne and natural golden tones. Only skin tones with pink or blue undertones gets away successfully  this trend.

Many clients ask me to give them grey hair colour, because they think it will end their colouring days… they fantasize about having a trendy colour that will eliminate their need to sit for their roots every 4 to 6 weeks. Unfortunately this is not the case… having the granny grey colour techniques performed on your hair can be one of the costliest colour options available today, not just because its trendy, but because it entails many procedures that are both time consuming and requires a skilled expert. It is simply not as easy as selecting the shade and applying it… it is a work of art performed by a skilled colourist and stylist to achieve the perfect shade of grey for each client!

Depending on the condition of your hair before the colour procedure begins, will also determine to a large extend how successful the end results will be, and the durability of your precious silver tresses will also greatly depend on this factor. If your hair has undergone any major chemical service like a perm, straightener, Brazilian blow-dry or bleach, your hair is more at risk of breakage and of uneven end results.

The darker your natural hair, the more damaging the hair techniques will be on your hair! The lightening service is the most stressful, both on the hair and the client, because usually old hair colour build-up in the cuticle prevent the hair from lightening evenly to a pale yellow. You are attempting the impossible if you think you can go from black to white or silver in one session with your hair. Let me assure you, it is not possible and even if you try multiple bleaching sessions on one day, if not applied expertly and supervised by an expert, your hair will break and you will look like a Canary!

Lets look at this example… if you had black or very dark hair, this is what a home bleaching job can look like after 30 minutes applied through mid-lengths to ends only.
The hair is not nearly light enough to make the grey colour possible. If you should apply the grey colour to this hair at this stage, you will only end up with a dirty muddy green-brown colour! So don’t even try it…

After a second bleach application the hair ended up on the orange and red stages. During this phase you can see that at this lady used strong direct dye products in her hair before. These direct dye pigments are very stubborn and sometimes impossible to remove! Most home colour dye kits contain direct pigments. So be warned!

After a third bleach bath,  the lady finally break free from the orange phase, but still sits with her hands in her hair, because even if she tried to apply the grey hair colour to this hair, she would end up with purple roots and beige golden blond ends… I see this so often in shopping centres,  where granny grey victims walk around with “Gentian violet” purple hair!

If your hairstylist recommend you to put gentian violet on your hair or in your shampoo, you should fire them immediately,  because it’s a big no-no in good hairdressing! Gentian violet is a liquid made to treat wounds. It contains IRON that help the wound to heal faster and acts as a disinfectant. Putting it in your hair will change the colour, but with your next lightening service will break your hair off at the roots! So be warned!

Like I said before, if the hair is already damaged,  and should you need to lift your hair more than 4 shades, you stand a risk of severe damage to your hair and your end result will not look good! You can spot the hair disasters easily as they walk down the street… because it simply doesn’t look good. No matter what they try, the hair is damaged and the colour has bands and areas that looks darker or more blue or purple than grey… remember the “Mermaid” trend is something else!

So now that I discussed the negative aspects of this trend, lets look at the positive ones too. I really love this trend, and when applied to a suitable candidate, who has enough time and resources, this technique can be powerful,  beautiful,  striking and very sexy!

Let me show you how it should look when it’s done properly!

Granny grey trends are beautiful. The idea is not so much related to defying age, as it is with working with strong colour reference like steel, chrome, silver, platinum, rose gold, titanium, copper and bronze.  New colour techniques and specialized colour formulas are the good colourists weapons against the mass consumer colour products. So don’t try to copy a work of art with a home bleach job and a box dye! You wont get the results, and it might cost you more to fix than to book your appointment with an expert!

I recommend the following to ensure you are a happy granny grey client:

  • Make an appointment with a hair colour specialist who comes recommended.
  • Do a consultation with them prior to the service and get a quote in writing!
  • Ensure your hair is in tip top condition. If you are doubtful, do a Bondplex/Olaplex type of treatment as a stand-alone before you begin bleaching.
  • Ensure you have enough funds for your Salon visit… rest assured, its going to be expensive! The longer your hair the more you can expect to pay.
  • Don’t leave the salon without the following items: a professional silver or frosted grey shampoo and or conditioner. You will need this to keep any brassy tones at bay in between salon visits. Your Nr.3 Bondplex/Olaplex type treatment for maintaining your hair integrity, condition and shine at home. This will protect and prolong your toner as well as your financial investment in your hair.
  • Go for a regular touch-up on your toner, this will extend your colour. If you leave the maintenance of your colour too long, you risk having to spend more again to get your fabulous locks back into the grey…
  • Don’t be in a hurry when you go for your granny trend appointment. Give yourself and your colourists enough time to achieve better results. Expect a three hour or longer visit to your salon!
  • In the long run, and when your colour is achieved expertly, you should find maintenance a breeze.

Late cancelation and no-show policy at salons under the microscope

Clients who don't honour their appointments be warned! The same consumer act that protects your rights also protects the service provider. Too many clients think it is acceptable to cancel late or not show up at all for their appointments!  This behaviour that has been a trend in recent years has come under the search light and in the light of "loss of income" on the service provider side, it has become clear that stricter cancelation policies are necessary to prevent a serious loss of revenue.

If you fail to cancel your appointment at a medical Doctor, or you don't show up for your appointment, rest assured you will receive a bill for the full amount due in the mail. Why should it be different at any other service provider? That's the point... according to the expert in this article, a reasonable cancelation fee is well within the service providers right, provided that the cancellation policy is provided at the time of the appointment... please note that ALL my appointments are confirmed via email containing my business terms and conditions, and by making an appointment with me you agree to the terms and conditions of Hair by Gideonslight at Salon Allure, whether you read the terms and conditions or not!

But what if you had a valid excuse? Unless it was for medical reasons (and you must be able to prove it with a medical certificate) you will be expected to reschedule your original appointment within 60 days from the cancellation date, and you will have to honour your appointment to avoid getting a bill with the appropriate cancellation fee; according to Peter Cumberlege, a legislative consultant to Fedhasa and administrator of Hospitality Stats-on-Line, explains that Section 17 (1) to (5) of the CPA dealing with the consumer's right to cancel advance reservation, booking or order will apply to all hospitality establishments as well as personal service providers, other than those covered by a franchise agreement. "It deals with the right of a consumer to cancel a reservation or booking, the right of a service provider to request a reasonable deposit and the right of a service provider to impose a reasonable charge for cancellation."

The closer to the appointment time that you cancel within the preceding 24 hours to your appointment, the harder it will be for the service provider to find a replacement booking for your appointment slot, the higher the penalty percentage can go. You can be liable for the entire bill of the full service you booked for in the instance that you cancel within the final hour or on the time that you were expected to arrive. Failing to show up without any communication from your side will result in a full penalty.

It may be hard for consumers to comprehend the stress it is to work for commission or to be self employed in any service industry, especially if they earn a stable salary with bonuses regardless of actual hours worked. When clients don't honour their appointments because they simply get cold feet or change their minds, they literally "steal" indirectly from the service provider. It is not always possible to fill the gap to compensate for the loss of income, especially in the final hour before the time.

So, dear consumer, be warned. Please honour your appointment or cancel 24 hours prior to your appointment or be willing to pay up when you receive a "Late Cancellation Penalty Fee" invoice!

For the sake of clarity, Hair by Gideonslight at Salon Allure will share his reviewed cancellation policy here for your perusal.

"👉❗ By making an appointment you automatically agree to the following terms and conditions.
👉Failing to cancel your appointment at least 24 hours before the time, or not honoring your appointment will result in penalties. You can be held responsible for the full value of your booking. The closer to the actual appointment time you cancel will determine the percentage of the cancellation fee payable.
👉Please arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment. Clients that are more than 15 minutes late may have to be rescheduled."
